Claude Skills vs MCP
They're often compared as if they compete. They don't. A Skill is a set of instructions the model reads; MCP is a connection to something outside the model. You can have a great Skill with no MCP, and an MCP server with no Skill. Most useful setups have both.
The one-line difference
**A Skill teaches the agent how to do a job. MCP gives the agent access to a system where the job happens.**
Example: a "publish article" workflow needs an MCP server to reach your CMS, and a Skill that knows your house style, image rules, and slug convention.
Side by side
| Skills | MCP | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A folder with SKILL.md and optional assets | A protocol + server exposing tools, resources, prompts |
| Unit of value | Procedural knowledge | Capability / data access |
| Loading | Metadata up front, body on activation | Tools listed up front, called on demand |
| Runs code | Can include scripts; agent executes them | Server runs code, agent calls it |
| Needs a service | No | Yes — a server process or remote endpoint |
| Typical failure | Description too vague, skill never triggers | Auth, permissions, server down |
| Best for | Repeatable output with a point of view | Reading/writing data in another system |
| Distribution | Copy a folder | Install and configure a server |
What a Skill contains that MCP can't
Taste. A Skill can say "headline at 72 px, never more than five words, accent colour only on the CTA" — and the agent will apply it every time. MCP has no opinion about your design system.
What MCP does that a Skill can't
Live state. A Skill can't read today's orders, post to Slack, or query your warehouse. It can describe how to do those things, but the actual call needs a tool.
When to use each
Use a Skill when:
- The work is repeatable and has a house style
- The inputs are files you already have
- You want the same output next month
Use MCP when:
- The data lives in another system
- The result changes minute to minute
- You need authentication and auditability
Use both when:
- The workflow spans a system and a format: "pull last week's numbers, then build the chart in our chart style."
A concrete example
Publishing a blog post:
- MCP reads the draft from Notion.
- Skill checks the house style, writes the meta description, and generates the OG image.
- MCP creates the CMS entry.
- Skill verifies the slug, canonical and internal links before publishing.
Remove either half and the job breaks.
Common myths
"Skills replace MCP." No. They replace long prompts and Notion docs full of instructions.
"MCP replaces Skills." No. A tool call doesn't carry your standards.
"Skills are just prompts." A prompt is consumed once. A Skill is discovered, versioned, and reused — and can ship scripts and assets.
FAQ
Do Skills need MCP to work? No. Most design and writing skills run entirely on files you provide.
Can a Skill call an MCP tool? It can instruct the agent to use one. The agent still needs the server configured.
Which should I build first? The Skill. It's a text file, it's portable, and it captures the part that's actually yours.
